China's capital Beijing is in the queue to exit the list of the 200 most polluted cities in the world this year. According to data compiled by IQAir AirVisual on Thursday, the damaging haze declined to a record level in August.
Beijing has been trying to reduce the level of PM2.5, which is a lung-damaging element, and has reduced this year by nearly 20 percent compared to last year and a third compared to 2017. This data is given by the Air Quality Technology Company of Switzerland.
Beijing has been at the forefront in the pollution fight that began in 2014, and for this, it identified the industries that caused pollution and worked to close it. The fuel and its emission standards were amended as well as coal consumption in the city and surrounding areas.
However, as per the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, there is no significant improvement in the air quality of the city. According to the WHO, the level of PM2.5 in the air should be 10 micrograms per cubic meter, which is still four times higher. Its volume in Beijing's air is 35 micrograms, exceeding China's own interim national standard.
Beijing's average PM2.5 concentration per hour in the first 8 months of the year was 42.6 micrograms, down 19.3 percent from the previous year. This figure was less than half of the same period in 2009. This was stated by IQAir AirVisual in a study of data from the US Embassy in Beijing and 34 official monitoring stations.
China has said that it will adopt a more targeted and effective approach during its campaign against pollution in 2019. But will not undermine their efforts and take action on violators.
Beijing has already said that this month it will ban fireworks and reduce air pollution. Beijing has taken this step, saying it wants to ensure that air pollution levels remain under control on October 1, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic.
